Description:
As the old saying goes: “You can’t understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” PennWest’s Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes is a walkathon event to help students consider and learn about sexualized violence and how it affects people. Anyone can fall victim to sexualized violence regardless of gender identity. In order to help prevent sexualized violence, we must talk about the causes, effects, and solutions to ending sexualized violence. We must educate ourselves and others, examine the sexual and gender biases that seed sexualized violence, and inoculate ourselves and our culture.
The Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes walkathon seeks to do this by partnering with Crime Victims Center of Erie (CVC). CVC Erie is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting sexual assault victims and their families and friends. It provides direct victim services and community education and outreach, throughout Erie County. CVC Erie has partnered with PennWest and offers violence prevention education and training programs on campus, and provides support to students who have suffered from sexual violence.
CVC Erie will provide educational materials and information during the Final Mile Ceremony on April 10, 2024. Donations pledged during the walkathon will be donated directly to CVC Erie in order support their efforts within Erie County.
Beneficiary: Crime Victim Center of Erie
Events:
- Team Walkathon, April 1-10, 2024
Teams representing different student organizations and athletic teams on campus will compete with each other to determine who can walk the most miles and obtain the most donation pledges from April 1 to April 10. Students will record their walking miles using their phones for confirmation. Screenshots can be taken and collected by the team for later submission. - Award Ceremony and Final Mile
Teams will gather together at the Pogue Theater to submit their final mileage numbers and donations. The first teams to turn in numbers will receive t-shirts. Information and giveaways from the Crime Victim Center of Erie will be available at the table. Weather permitting, teams present will then walk together to complete a final mile. Then teams will come together in the Pogue Theater for an awards ceremony. The team which walked the most miles will be announced and awarded the Shoe Trophy. The team reporting the most donations will be announced and awarded the Other Shoe Trophy. These trophies will be held by the student organization collectively either in the offices in Pogue or Athletics.
